One of my favorite parts about visiting a city is people watching. While Waikiki is not exactly a big city, there is definitely a lot of great people watching to be had because there are so many types of people in one place. Normally, my favorite part is seeing all the Japanese wedding photo shoots. If you walk around enough, you’ll probably see three or four in a few hours. The brides are gorgeous with their huge skirts and it’s entertaining to see the wedding factory at work.
Street Vendors and Shows
Another traditional Waikiki favorite is the evening street vendors. People set up and sell portraits, psychic readings and art. There are also entertainers – from human statues, to singers, dancers and the requisite parrot photo ops. One of my all time favorite was a hamster dressed in aloha attire. You can walk the whole length of Waikiki and take in snippets of shows and eccentric characters.
In our most recent trip, we didn’t see any weddings and were too early for the night life, but what we saw made up for it. Below are our photos of our five hour layover in Waikiki.
This was so random and so great! We had just arrived to Waikiki and were about to cross the street when we came across this bizarre scene. A man wearing a shark head was riding tandem on a motorcycle. Always have your camera ready! You never know what you’ll find.
Stilts on the Third Floor
As we were eating our sushi and sake special at Kona Grill, we caught a glimpse of a scene even more bizarre than the shark man. A towering figure in white, silver and red and two geisha-like handlers ambled our way. He was posing for photo ops and just generally posing in a delightfully flamboyant drag style – to promote the grand opening of a new restaurant in the International Marketplace – Baku. We got to eat and be entertained and of course snap a few photos.
Planning Your Trip to Waikiki
I hope you’re excited and inspired by all the fun Waikiki has to offer. You could easily spend your whole Hawaii vacation there but I highly recommend getting out of Waikiki and taking in more of what Oahu has to offer. As you research, make sure to add all of your ideas to the Tripidee trip planner. You’ll get images of your stops and everything will be put on a map, making travel planning super easy!
