Visitors to Kauai fall in love with the beaches but many are not safe for swimming. We put together a list of our top Kauai beaches for children and families. All have bathrooms and lifeguards – a must for children, and they’re easy to get to. Enjoy our tops! We made sure to select spots all over the island, so you’ll be close to one where ever you’re staying. They’re part of our Kauai Beach guide trip on Tripidee.
Lydgate Beach Park, Kapaa
Lydgate is our absolute favorite beach for kids on Kauai. There are two protected swimming areas – one that is really shallow and ideal for toddlers, and the other is pretty deep and you can snorkel in it, perfect for older kids and adults. The park has showers and bathrooms and a lifeguard tower. Only swim in the protected area! The area outside has dangerous cross currents.
What makes Lydgate super amazing is the playground across the street. Kamalani playground is a huge wooden play structure that was created by volunteers. Children LOVE this spot.
Poipu Beach Park, Poipu
A large enclosed swimming area is our favorite feature of Poipu beach park on the south side of Kauai. This beach tends to be one of the busiest so plan for people! There is a lifeguard stand and a small playground as well as bathrooms and showers.
Across the street is a place to get drinks, sandwiches, and shave ice! A perfect way to cool down when it gets too hot.
Hanalei Bay, Hanalei
Hanalei Bay is an iconic Kauai beach, voted as the best beach in the US a few years ago. The bay is calm most of the year due to its protected location. Kids enjoy playing at the waters edge or jumping off the pier. Make sure to check with the lifeguards for ocean conditions before going in.
Parking can be tricky at this location, so be prepared to drive around a bit. There are a few places to park that also have bathrooms and showers.
Salt Pond, Hanapepe
If you’re looking for sun, the west side of Kauai is your best bet. Salt Pond beach is semi-protected, making it more calm for children. There is also a lifeguard, bathrooms and showers. We love this beach because it has a more laid back feel. Looking for food? You can bring your own picnic or look for a food truck parked at the beach. There is usually at least one nearby.
